Taking care of our skin means knowing it inside and out. We're all about being proactive, so regular self-checks are a must! Set a reminder for yourself to perform these checks at least once a month. When it comes to your skin, familiarity is key. The more you know about your skin, the easier it becomes to spot any new developments.
Make sure you conduct your self-examinations in a well-lit environment. Natural light is best, but if that's not possible, good indoor lighting will do the trick. We want to ensure nothing goes unnoticed! When you're performing your self-checks, be sure to pay attention to the following areas:
When it comes to skin health, early detection is key. That's where the ABCDE method comes in—a simple yet powerful tool to help you identify potential signs of melanoma. By understanding the ABCDE rule, you'll be better equipped to recognize any irregularities in moles or spots on your skin. Let's dive in and learn how to use this method to protect your skin and overall well-being.
In addition to the ABCDE rule, keep an eye out for other warning signs, such as new or changing growths, sores that won't heal, and any redness, itching, or bleeding that persists. Your skin deserves your attention and care!
By incorporating these self-examination tips into your routine, you'll become a pro at spotting any suspicious bumps, spots, or irritations. Remember, it's all about being proactive and showing your skin some extra love and care. Your skin is counting on you!

Mothers often find immense joy in spending time with their extended family. Take this opportunity to reach out to family members she hasn't seen in a while and plan a surprise visit. Bringing her friends together allows her to cherish moments of laughter and connection with her loved ones. The shared experience will make her feel cherished and appreciated.
One of the most heartfelt ways to show Mom you care is by cooking her favourite meal. Take the time to learn the recipe and put your heart and soul into preparing it for her. Decorate the table with her favourite flowers and candles to create a cozy atmosphere. When she sits down to enjoy the delicious meal, she will feel appreciated and loved.
Whether it's handmade or store-bought, the thought and effort behind the present will make her feel special. In this post, we’ll explore signs that your family member may benefit from a pet companion, discuss the three most popular types of pets to consider, and offer guidance on how to start the conversation.
When it comes to helping our senior loved ones lead fulfilling lives, sometimes the simplest of solutions can have the biggest impact. The presence of a furry companion can provide not only companionship, but also a sense of purpose, routine, and physical and emotional support. If you are unsure whether your loved one would benefit from a pet in their life, there are a few signs to watch for. The following list outlines some common indicators that your loved one may be ready for pet ownership and the benefits that come along with it.
Your loved one's lifestyle, personality and health should all be taken into consideration when selecting the right pet. Some pets require more intensive daily care than others, while some may be better suited for specific living environments or dietary restrictions. Here are a few of the most popular types of pets that you can consider:
Dogs are one of the most popular pets in the world and are known as "man's best friend." They are not only great companions for people of all ages but can also be particularly beneficial for seniors. If you are considering getting a dog for your aging loved one, it's essential to think through the pros and cons carefully. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Cats make lovely pets and are a popular choice for seniors looking for animal companionship. If you are considering getting a cat for your aging loved one, it is essential to evaluate the pros and cons carefully. Here are some things to keep in mind.
Fish are one of the most low-maintenance pets to look after, making them an excellent choice for seniors who have limited mobility or living space. If you are thinking of getting fish for your aging loved one, it is essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Introducing a pet into someone's life should not be taken lightly, so ensure that they are aware of the commitment involved prior to getting started. If your loved one is interested in having a pet companion, communicate openly and honestly with them about their expectations so that you can find the right pet for them.
Having a pet companion can bring many positive changes to the life of a senior. Not only can pets provide unconditional love and companionship, but they can also help boost physical activity, reduce stress and anxiety levels, and improve overall well-being. However, it's important to consider your loved one's lifestyle, preferences, and other factors before introducing a pet into their life. Ultimately, the decision to get a pet should be driven by your loved one's desires and needs. With careful consideration and informed decisions, both you and your loved one can find the perfect pet companion for them!

]]>In this blog post, we'll share some tips on travelling with people of all ages during March Break so you can enjoy a stress-free family holiday!
March Break is here, and it's time to start planning the perfect holiday for your entire family. When planning a trip with people of all ages, it's important that you consider everyone's preferences and interests. Here are a few tips to help you create the perfect March Break getaway:
Family vacations should be fun for everyone! When selecting your March Break destination, look for attractions that appeal to all ages, such as swimming, hiking and sightseeing. You may also want to research family-friendly parks, playgrounds and activities so the kids don't get bored. Don't forget to look into restaurants too - make sure there is something on the menu that appeals to each member of the group.
Before you and your family embark on your vacation, take the time to create a detailed itinerary that caters to everyone's interests. Make a list of activities such as sightseeing, shopping and eating out at local eateries. When choosing activities, think about your group's different ages and preferences so that there is something for everyone. After deciding what you want to do, pick out the days in advance and plan how long each activity will be - if any attractions require tickets or reservations beforehand, then book those early.
TIP: Leave space for changes or surprises during the trip - you never know what exciting opportunities await!
When planning your March Break travels, research all types of accommodations in the area to find the best fit for you. Opt for a hotel or resort for access to amenities such as swimming pools, gyms and restaurants. Alternatively, you may want to consider renting a house or apartment on a sharing platform such as Airbnb for more space at an affordable price. Location is key too; make sure your chosen accommodation is close to any activities you plan for your stay. That way, everyone can make the most out of their trip!
If you're planning a family vacation, research available discounts that can help you save money. Look into discounts offered by museums, zoos and theme parks based on age and any special promotions, coupons or offers you can take advantage of. Consider travel packages or flight deals offered by agencies for additional savings. To make the most of your March Break, join loyalty programs with hotels and airlines - this could give you exclusive perks and discounts!
Planning a family vacation can be exciting, but don't forget to pack for everyone - including your grandparents! Be sure to bring items that make the whole family comfortable - enough snacks to last their long journey, noise-cancelling headphones for grandma and grandpa who might need some peace and quiet, games to keep the kids busy, etc. Here are a few more tips to remember before hitting the road:
Every individual needs to have their own clothing and personal items such as toothbrushes, shampoo, laptops or tablets. Double-check that everyone has enough clothes and other essentials before heading off on your trip. It's also a good idea to bring along extra clothes in case of any spills or accidents during your travels.
Accidents happen, so it is important to always have a first aid kit with you. Your first aid should be well equipped to handle minor cuts and scrapes, bee stings, allergic reactions, and any other medical emergency.
Ensure everyone in your family has the necessary travel documents, and make sure they're all up-to-date before packing them away. Don't forget to pack any relevant chargers for your laptops, cell phones, tablets and any other electronic devices you may take with you. There's nothing worse than finding out you've left an essential device charger behind!
Travelling with people of all ages doesn't have to be stressful. With the right planning and preparation, you can make sure everyone has a great time and return with happy memories that will last for years! So whether your travels take you near or far, have a fun and memorable March Break with your family. Good luck, and happy travels!

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a seasonal psychological condition that causes depression-like symptoms when the days get shorter and the nights become longer during the colder seasons. It's common across different age groups and can be incredibly debilitating in the winter months for seniors.
While some winter blues are normal, seniors struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder may have a harder time managing the winter months. Noticing the signs of seasonal depression among seniors early can help prevent serious mood disorders or prolonged sadness.
Common winter blues symptoms include:
There are many potential causes of winter blues in seniors. Pay close attention to changes in lifestyle and environment that may be causing winter depression in your loved one.
Isolation plays a major role for the elderly struggling with seasonal depression, as staying connected to family and friends is vital to emotional support during this difficult time.
The holidays can often be the most isolating period of the year - not only does seasonal depression affect how we interact with those around us, but physical limitations can prevent seniors from participating in holiday activities or seeing their families. This lack of involvement leads to further feelings of loneliness and despair, worsening the effects of seasonal depression.
For seniors, seasonal changes can bring about more than just a change in weather. It can also mean fluctuations in one's hormone levels and potentially seasonal affective disorder.
While winter brings shorter days of sunlight, decreasing the body's serotonin levels, long summer daylight hours can cause irregular melatonin production. While seasonal depression is common among all age groups, seniors may be more sensitive to seasonal mood swings due to their changing hormone levels.
Low exposure to natural light during the winter months is one of the main culprits for SAD, as sunlight helps regulate our circadian rhythms and plays a fundamental role in feeling energized and keeping a positive mental outlook.
During weeks of decreased sunlight and long cold spells, some seniors may experience lower energy levels and suffer from seasonal depression. The lack of sunshine can lead to trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, and reduced participation in normally enjoyed activities.
It can be challenging to spot winter blues in seniors, as the symptoms can differ for each individual. But being aware of winter blues and taking the necessary steps to help your loved one can make a world of difference.
Here are some tips on how you can help your senior during the winter months:
One of the best things you can do to help a senior loved one through the winter blues is to check in with them regularly. This can be done via phone, text, email, or even video chat. Checking in allows you to stay up-to-date on how they are doing and see if they need any assistance.
Another way to help a senior loved one through the winter blues is to encourage socialization. Socialization can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are common among seniors during the winter months. Try setting up regular coffee dates or inviting them to join you for an activity.
Sometimes, all a senior loved one needs is someone to talk to. Be a good listener and allow them to vent about their frustrations or share their happy moments with you. Just being there for them can make a world of difference during the sometimes difficult winter months.
Helping a senior loved one maintain a healthy lifestyle is essential to managing winter blues. Encourage them to stay active, eat nutritious meals, and get enough sleep each night. Keeping their mind and body in top shape can help reduce winter depression symptoms.
Here are some of the ways that aging affects the skin and why natural skincare products are so important for older adults:
As we age, our skin's sensitivity increases, and its ability to tolerate more aggressive products decreases. Many products contain fragrances and perfumes, which can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions such as itching or redness.
Loss of collagen
The loss of collagen causes the skin to form fine lines and wrinkles. These fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable as we age and can make the skin look dull and lifeless.
Skin becomes thinner
Our skin becomes thinner and more fragile the older we get. This makes it more susceptible to environmental factors and damage from the sun leading to sun spots and even skin cancer.
As we get older our skin becomes less well-hydrated and, therefore, more prone to dryness, itchiness, and discomfort. For those with diabetes, natural skin care products can be especially helpful in keeping your skin moisturized.
At Alder and Owl, we care about your skin.
That's why we work hard to provide various products made from natural ingredients free from harsh chemicals. We carefully curate each box so that you can access the best quality items available, helping you look and feel your best.

]]>Donating to a local senior home is an act of generosity that brings joy to both the giver and the receiver. It’s a chance to show our community that we care about those who have come before us, and it can be a rewarding experience for all involved.
Here are four reasons why giving to a local senior home can make a difference:
The elderly often feel isolated, forgotten, and unloved. Donating to a local senior home is one way of showing them they are valued, respected, and appreciated by the community. It shows that their lives are meaningful, have made a difference, and are an important part of our society.
Older adults might feel disconnected from the world, and donating to a local home can help them reconnect with their community. When seniors feel connected to their community, it creates a sense of purpose and meaning for them. It shows that people in the community care about them and are willing to invest in their well-being.
Many seniors don’t receive gifts from family or friends during the holidays. Donating to a local senior home allows them to experience the joy of giving and receiving. It also gives them something to look forward to, which can make all the difference for those who may otherwise feel alone and forgotten during the holidays.
Finally, donating to a local senior home is an opportunity to create a sense of community and bridge the generations. By giving back to our community’s seniors, we are helping to create a stronger sense of togetherness and bridge the generations, ensuring that our community remains connected.
When donating to a local senior home, there are many items that can be donated that will bring joy and comfort to the residents of these homes. Here are some of the items that seniors often need in their homes:
Donating is an opportunity to show appreciation for those who have served our community throughout the years, and it can help bring joy to those in need during the holiday season.
If you’re unsure of how to donate, reach out to your local senior homes and inquire about how you can help.
Here are a few ideas to help you get started:
Planned giving is one of the most meaningful ways to show your support for our community’s seniors. When you make a planned gift, you leave a lasting legacy of support that will benefit the senior home for years to come. These donations are usually used to help cover the costs of medical care, housing, and other essential services.
Everyone loves receiving gifts, and seniors are no different! Consider sending a gift box to the local senior home. You can include items such as books, puzzles, snacks, hygiene supplies, or any other small token of appreciation that you think they would enjoy. Our Alder and Owl gift boxes make a wonderful present, and a percentage of our sales goes to helping seniors in our communities - so you can feel good knowing that you’re giving back while providing quality products.
If your heart is calling you to do more to support seniors in your community, here are a few more ideas:
Volunteer your time. Volunteer at a local senior home or assisted living facility and offer your services for activities for the residents. Offer companionship and conversation, read books or old newspapers aloud, organize games, or help with office tasks.
Deliver holiday treats and cards. Show your appreciation for the seniors in your life by sending them cards and letters over the holidays. Not only will it bring a smile to their faces, but it also shows that you are thinking of them during this season of joy.
Prepare and serve meals to seniors. The holidays can be a lonely time for many seniors, especially those who do not have family nearby to celebrate with. Consider volunteering your time and energy by cooking meals for senior homes and serving them to those in need.
By giving back to our seniors during this season of joy, we can ensure that those in need receive the support and appreciation they deserve. So, this holiday season, consider donating to your local senior home and make a positive impact in your community. Show your appreciation for the seniors who have served our community over the years and give them a chance to feel seen, loved, and connected during this special time of the year. Together, let’s show that we care and create a brighter future for our seniors.
Happy holidays!

]]>Families come together to celebrate, share traditions, and create new memories. Laughter, love, and warmth fill the air. There's nothing quite like being surrounded by the people you love most in the world.
So, whether they live down the street or on the other side of the country, here are a few ways to stay connected with your loved ones and make the most of this holiday season!
It doesn't have to be challenging to create a connection when family members live far away. And many seniors still suffer from loneliness and isolation. Here are a few tips on how to bridge the distance during the holidays:
In today's digital world, we often communicate with our loved ones through text, email, and social media. While there's nothing wrong with this, there's something special about receiving a handwritten letter or card in the mail. It's a thoughtful way to let your loved ones know you're thinking of them, and it's a lovely keepsake for them to treasure.
Besides, it's a nice break from all the holiday bills and advertisements that tend to fill our mailboxes this time of year! If you need help with what to write, try sharing a memory of your favourite holiday or sharing what you're most grateful for this year.
Sometimes, all you need is to hear your loved one's voice to feel connection and love. Pick up the phone and give them a call! Have a long chat and catch up on everything you've been doing. It'll feel like you're right there with them in no time.
If you're worried about long-distance charges, there are plenty of free calling apps available that can help you connect with your loved ones no matter where they are in the world. Do a quick search, find the best app for you, and give them a call!
If you can't be together in person, the next best thing is to see each other's faces! Schedule a video call using Skype, FaceTime, or another platform. This way, you can chat and see each other's reactions in real time. You may even want to plan to make a holiday meal together or open gifts at the same time!
This is an excellent way to connect with loved ones who live far away, or you don't get to see often. Connecting over video makes it feel like they're right there in the room with you and help to make the connection feel more personal.
A care package is a great way to let your loved ones know you're thinking of them. You can fill it with their favourite treats, a cozy blanket or scarf, a festive mug, holiday decorations, and anything else you think they'll enjoy. It's a fun way to show you're thinking of them and make them feel loved from afar.
Our Holiday Seasonal Gift Box is the perfect way to show your loved ones you're thinking of them this holiday season. It includes mittens, candles, and so much more - everything your loved ones need to cozy up and enjoy the holidays!
Nothing brings back happy memories quite like photos! Put together a photo album or scrapbook full of your favourite memories together. You can also include handwritten notes, poems, or anything else that will make them smile. This is a gift they'll be sure to treasure for years to come.
To start, gather all the photos you can find and then get creative! If you need help figuring out where to start, there are plenty of tutorials and resources online that can help.
If your loved ones live close by, you are so fortunate! Here are some tips for maintaining connection and creating lasting memories:
One of the best ways to connect with your loved ones is through food. Share your favourite recipes with each other and take some time to make them together. It's a great way to spend quality time with your family and learn about their favourite flavours and ingredients. Plus, it's an excellent opportunity for them to pass down some of their cooking secrets!
If a kitchen is available, set up a time to rent or use one and make some cookies together! You could also bring some ingredients from home and cook a family meal.
Whether it's decorating the Christmas tree together, making gingerbread houses, or watching the ball drop on New Year's Eve, traditions are a great way to connect with your loved ones. They're a way to create new memories and hold on to the past.
Are there any traditions you and your loved ones share? Work to keep them alive and pass them down to future generations. Together, create a new way for your family to observe these traditions.
Sometimes, just sitting down and talking with your loved ones can be the best way to connect with them. Learn about their lives, their dreams, and anything else they want to share with you. You could get to know their friends and family better or ask about their hobbies.
Take some time to really listen and learn about them. It's an excellent way to stay connected and can help you understand each other on a deeper level.
Each year, there are a ton of holiday events in Toronto. From the Santa Claus Parade to carolling in the Distillery District, to the Holiday Fair at Nathan Philips Square - there are plenty of opportunities for you and your family to get together and celebrate this festive season.
Whatever it is, attending a local event together is a great way to make new memories and connect.
At Alder & Owl, we know how important it is to stay connected with family connected with your loved ones during the holidays. With a little creativity and planning, you can make it a special and memorable time for everyone. So go ahead and spread some holiday cheer! Your loved ones will be so grateful you did.

Your beloved morning ritual is about to get way better, and tastier.
Blume is a Canadian-born company enhancing our favourite morning brews.
Most of the coffee & lattes we order everyday have loads of added sugar & unhealthy syrups. Our friends at Blume imagined something different.
Blume swaps out all the unnecessary additives in our favourite drinks for healthy, all-natural ingredients that taste amazing and are better for you.
We're excited to offer Salted Caramel Latte as part of this year's Holiday box 2022.
Salty, rich, and a classic, Blume created a delicious alternative made with natural sweeteners and superfoods like: maca and schisandra.
The Salted Caramel blend is:
1. Stir together 1 tsp of the blend and a splash of hot water. Sweeten to taste as desired (we like maple syrup).
2. Add a shot of espresso for an extra boost, if that’s your style.

]]>Growing up with my English Nana she loved tea time and sweets. We loved to bake. So, naturally when I bake these days with my kids, there's an abundance of sprinkles, chocolate chips and confectioners sugar!
Turns out, sugar doesn't like me as much as I like it.
Sugar is unfortunately unhealthy and as we grow older, in most cases, sugar is completely cut from our diets.
Leafy greens, dairy products & fruits have naturally occurring sugar, but the benefits of eating these foods far outweighs the sugar warnings. High amounts of fibre, essential minerals, antioxidants, protein are all things us humans need!
That means, we should be cutting down on the "unnecessary" processed sugars. This can be very difficult and down-right impossible for some of us who love dessert after dinner.
Sugar Free Please has figured out a way to ensure we can enjoy all the things we love about sweet treats without the harmful effects of processed sugar!
A family owned-business, Sugar Free Please dedicated themselves to creating sugar-alternative snacks for people determined to follow a sugar-free and low-carb lifestyle.
"It has been most rewarding to help others, even if in a small way like providing snacks and desserts to those who need & want them."
I'm so excited to enjoy Sugar Free Please with my family and share their amazing line of products with our customers!
Our Autumn Box features the Coconut Clusters, which is a delicious alternative to your favourite coconut chocolate bar. More so, we selected Sugar Free Please because we know our adult parents and grandparents will enjoy something they know is safe, and of course, thoughtful.
Why send them something they can’t even eat? Sugar Free Please is an awesome, unique gift that we know you will love!
Purchase your Autumn Box now for your loved ones. Our goal is to create intentional gifts for grandparents made with love and are thoughtfully curated.
Have you tired the Coconut Clusters in our recent Autumn box? Let us know in the comments below!

Long-awaited, joyful or expected changes are exciting. On the flip side, change can be quite the opposite.
No matter what stage of life you're in, change can be difficult and it's good to ask for support. It's also good to be that support system when change is happening to another.
As we get older, change seems to happen faster. We can see it in our parents or grandparents as once simple activities become a little bit harder or take a bit more time. You might notice them struggle more with the TV remote or forget to pay a bill. Frustration can creep in when routines are messed up.
Change can be challenging for older adults, with the added stress and worry of losing their independence to cognitive and physical changes. And this stress can affect existing health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
Whether in person or from afar, there are many ways you can help older loved ones cope in times of change. Here are some suggestions.
In times of change, it is important to stay in touch with your loved ones and support them as much as possible. That's a really big reason we stayed very close to our family members during their times of change. We learned that supporting family and friends doesn't end, no matter the age.
It's beneficial to stay connected and develop strong relationships or support and trust with your parents and grandparents.
At Alder & Owl, our goal is to help you foster that connection throughout the year with carefully curated gift boxes for any occasion…or no occasion at all.

]]>Connection is powerful. Connection with family and friends, connection with the world around us...it makes a definitive impact on our wellbeing and overall health.
While many of us found ways to connect and pass the time when social distancing was at its peak, others, especially older adults and the disabled, struggled with isolation and loneliness.
And while the pandemic may have highlighted the vulnerability of these groups, the fact is that isolation and loneliness, for seniors especially, is an issue that has been prevalent for many years.
Alder & Owl wants to make a difference.
Isolation and loneliness in seniors is both physically and mentally dangerous. Research suggests that the risk of mortality from loneliness is on par with smoking 15 cigarettes a day - that's shocking!
While overall health tends to decline as we age, when you add loneliness and isolation to the mix, existing health conditions can worsen.
Bad habits can emerge or worsen. From lack of activity to unhealthy eating habits, seniors in isolation can lose the drive to stay active and engaged. Medications and a natural decrease in appetite can result in not eating or eating less healthy, balanced meals.
Risk of cognitive decline. Studies show that mental decline happens much faster in seniors that are lonely or isolated and the risk of Alzheimer’s nearly doubles. “Exercising” the brain can help to keep it healthy and slow down age-related changes like dementia. And while physical activity is good, cognitive improvements can also come from simple artistic activities, such as painting or knitting and even listening to music.
If you have a loved one that lives some distance away and you are unable to visit as often as you’d like, be aware of some of the signs that can arise from someone that is experiencing loneliness or isolation.
While you can’t always change the living situation, there are ways to help reduce their isolation and feelings of loneliness. Having a caregiver visit a few times a week can help fill the gaps when you can’t be there. Services to help their home feel more pleasant like professional declutter services for example. There are also local senior centres that have outreach programs for seniors that can’t travel on their own and adult day care centres that have social activities.
And for those times in between, including gifts for milestones, you can let them know you are thinking about them by sending one of our carefully curated gift boxes that can contain activities to help stimulate their brain, along with other items to brighten their day.
Our gift boxes were designed just for this purpose - to let family and friends we may not see so often know how much we care. Sending a thoughtful gift just for them will make their day and keep you connected.

Most of us know that life expectancy for men is less than for women…by about 5 years. With all the advancements we’ve made in medicine, why is this still the case? The truth is no one knows for sure, but one of the leading theories is that men simply don’t take care of themselves as well. As long as you feel okay, there is no reason to see the doctor, right?
Wrong! Older men in particular should get regular checkups with their doctors. Here are three common health issues senior men face:
Men are twice as likely as women to suffer a heart attack and are diagnosed with heart disease about 10 years younger than women. It’s the second-highest cause of death among Canadians, but one that is preventable and treatable if managed early. While there are many risk factors for cardiovascular disease, lifestyle plays a major role. Uncontrolled diabetes and obesity are key risk factors, making regular exercise and a healthy diet important in the prevention and management of heart disease.
What you can do:
One of the most common cancers in men, prostate cancer affects approximately one in nine Canadian men and is one of the least preventable. That’s why it is so important to get regular checkups, especially for men over 50 where the majority of cases occur. With early detection, the survival rate is nearly 100%.
Risk factors include
Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body cannot make enough insulin or properly use it to control the sugar in your blood. Unlike Type 1, which is an autoimmune disease, Type 2 diabetes is primarily caused by lifestyle and weight. As we age, we may become less active leading to weight gain and even obesity. Combine this with a poor diet (does dad have a sweet tooth?) and your risk of diabetes increases significantly. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to other serious issues, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
Signs to look for
As we age, we need to pay more attention to our overall health. And for men who are notoriously bad at this, a few gentle reminders and help from family can go a long way in ensuring dad has a long and healthy life.
Make sure he’s getting his annual checkup. Accompany him to the grocery store and lead him to better food choices. Go for walks together and encourage him to keep active. And most of all, be observant of any changes in his health or demeanour that might signal something is wrong.
As we look forward to celebrating dad this Father’s Day, let him know you’re thinking about him by checking in on his health.

Some time ago, my grandfather was recovering from a heart attack in hospital. Over the course of a few weeks, he coloured every day. It clearly became part of his healing! He was able to keep his mind off his troubles and stay calm.
There are a list of therapeutic benefits to colouring:
That is why it was very important to find the perfect colouring book as our activity in the MySenior Spring box.
Rasm Print Creations is a small-business based in Ottawa, Ontario. Zahira is the creative mind and artist behind Rasm Print Creations. She has two small children and her work is fantastically unique. Her illustrations are beautiful, educational and meaningful. We felt connected to her story and we’re excited to share it with you.
The word “rasm” in Dari (one of the official languages of Afghanistan) translates to “draw” because she hand-draws everything and Afghanistan is her motherland.
The idea behind Rasm Print Creations was born out of a desire to create sketches while taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
“With every sketch I found myself being swept away to the countries of my childhood in the Middle East and Central Asia. In these sketches were snippets of what I had at one point called home and at times, still find myself calling home, as well as the beauty of the diverse cultures I grew up with,” Zahira says. “Each image I drew was different from the images the media showed about those regions of the world”.
At the core of Rasm Print Creations is the aim of using art as a tool to celebrate diversity while educating viewers about cultures that are portrayed in a singular and often negative light in mainstream media.
This is something that is incredibly important to her personally, but can be extended to anyone who is from a mixed-culture family, interacts with people from different cultures (such as educators, social workers, doctors or other professionals), or anyone who has an interest in learning about cultures different from their own.
This book takes us on an illustrative journey through some of the diverse sense around our beautiful planet Earth. Take an immersive adventure while colouring each page and learn something about other cultures and the diversity our world has to offer.
You can colour, and learn, at any age! Rasm Print Creations has a library full of products that showcase her country, culture and other parts of the world.
The Global Adventures colouring book will be an item in our MySenior Spring Box along with crayons so your loved ones will be ready to expressing themselves, explore and have some fun.
]]>For many reasons, adults experience anxiety, stress and challenges that are unforeseen. We question the very thoughts we have, we don’t validate ourselves for feeling a certain way. Worse, many of us don’t talk about it.
Now is the time to speak up about how you’re feeling. Now is the time to support a friend. If you are going through a tough time, you’re not alone. We are with you, and we support you.

]]>A resident of the long-term care home was having a visit with her grandchildren. The three of them were playing a card game called Scoppa. The game was exciting. I could hear her grandchildren laughing because their grandmother was so competitive. I watched for 10 minutes, and I'm sure the game went on for the rest of the morning.
Spending quality time like that with family isn't always possible, especially while our communities deal with COVID.
So, I started researching some ways we can use our time to add quality to our senior's lives.
Simply calling your loved one - yes calling! - can brighten their day.
Victoria Tyryshkin, Dementia Specialist at Seniors At Home’s Center for Dementia Care, says that for many older adults connecting over the phone is a great way to connect.
“Most of my clients prefer to chat on the phone—even though many have been exposed to newer technology, the phone is what they are most comfortable using,” says Victoria.
To add to this, Victoria says you can play music or sing over the phone. Playing a few intellectual games is a great idea too! A couple of examples are:
1. "What's your favourite" - Ask your grandparent what their favourite animals are, vacation spots, snacks, or songs. This can even lead to stories from their past, which they love to share.
2. "Alphabet" - Start with a letter and ask your senior what words start with that letter, you can add different topics, places or even get specific with animals or food groups.
Dr. Carolyn Boulos wrote on her blog that some deliveries, including hand-written cards, flowers or a personalized gift (a MySenior box perhaps), would be really great too.
"Send flowers or deliver food: Even though our lives are more virtual nowadays, people do appreciate tangible items at this time. Sending flowers or delivering food in a safe manner can make a big difference to someone, especially if they are isolated and alone during the holidays."
She also mentions some really great ways to plan virtual calls with grandparents as well. If you know your senior's care giver, it could be easier than you think to have them set up a call for you. That way, you can have them on a call and involve them in fun activities. Some pre-planned virtual call activities can include:
I hope these ideas give you some inspiration. We can't always be together, but there are still ways to ensure your time can create valuable care moments for your loved one.
Do you have an idea? Please share it below in the comments, I would love to hear any ideas you have too.

Another way to create connection is time.
The amazing people at Smile Theater donate their time to brighten the lives of seniors living in care centers.
Over the last 50 years, Smile Theater has created meaningful, well-crafted professional performances just for senior citizens. Smile Theater’s live performances are a powerful tool to create connection, company and positive experiences for seniors.
Residents are encouraged to move, sing, dance, and share in stories to help lift the spirits of the entire community. Smile Theater performers talk and meet with residents, making everyone feel involved and special.
This incredible idea changes and brightens the lives of many. Imagine being part of one of the Smile Theater’s shows and seeing senior’s faces light up. That thought is why we wanted to support their work.
Did you know that 2 out of 3 seniors in care report they feel isolated or lonely? There is always a reason to connect to our elderly community. By donating time, calling a family member or sending a gift, these small acts of kindness change the lives of many – and that’s always worth it.
We’re so excited to work with Smile Theater! For every box purchased we commit to donate a percentage directly to Smile Theater. We want to help spread the word within the senior community and beyond. Check them out: http://smiletheatre.com/

]]>In my personal experience, my first son Luke had very bad eczema and in the winter months he would have regular flare ups. I tried a ton of creams, and I can say without a doubt shea butter helped Luke’s skin the most. (For parents reading this, we found over time lactose was creating the underlying issues, and lotion after a room-temperature bath helped ease irritation.)
I first found the SHē Company when I was looking for a natural product for my son. I was so happy to find out about this local, women-lead company.
That’s why we’re so excited to feature the SHē Company as our lotion for our winter box! Not only does each batch smell fresh and lovely, their shea butter is rich and perfect for dry skin.
The SHē Company is a sister-run small business located in the GTA that produces creamy, luxurious & light whipped shea body butter in small batches. SHē Whipped Body Butter is made with 100% Ghanaian Shea butter and organic coconut oil, and is scented using organic essential oils.

]]>As the seasons change, there is nothing like a warm cup of tea to cozy up to during the day. My father was born in England, about 45 minutes north of London, so in my family, we drank tea more than we drank water.
Nearly every memory I have of my nana involves choosing, brewing, drinking or cleaning up tea. It was picked, heated, spilled and enjoyed all of the time, so it's no surprise I drink tea regularly as an adult. When we first moved into our home, establishing the tea cabinet was at the top of my to-do list.
My story might sound very familiar to you, because tea can be found in almost every single household. You can enjoy a cup with a friend, a relative or yourself. Also, tea has expansive health benefits; there's tea for tummy issues, joint pain, nausea, headaches, skin health, fertility...you name it, there's probably a tea for it.
Pluck Tea, is a premium Toronto-based business that really loves tea. They share their love for tea and delicious small-batch brews because they genuinely care about tea. Pluck's mission? It wanted to shake up what traditional tea-drinking means in a local and sustainable way, and they definitely did that.
Pluck teas are deliciously infused with local ingredients from Prince Edward County lavender, to cranberries from Nova Scotia, and grape skins from the Southbrook Vineyards in Niagara.
Pluck Tea is also changing the game by shrinking its environmental footprint. All Pluck's tea bags are 100% biodegradable and all ingredients are ethically sourced - wow, my nana would be impressed.
My favourite tea is Earl Grey; needless to say, I was thrilled to see it as one of Pluck's long list of menu items. Whether you enjoy black tea, green, herbal (check out Pluck's website for more) Pluck also shares tea health benefits when you purchase any of the brews online. To my point, tea can have important health benefits. My fav, Earl Grey is in the black tea family and black tea has been linked to:
